Co-Club Director - Head Coach
Karen Gray joined Aspire in 2008, it’s second year in existence. Along with her husband, Jonathan Gray, they are associate owners of the club and Karen is the associate club director for 14 and under teams. Coach Gray is currently the head Varsity coach at Mountain Pointe High School where she has been the head coach for five years and the JV coach for the two prior. The MP girl’s varsity team has made the D1 state playoffs for the five years she has been the head coach with a second place finish in 2016 and 3rd in 2017.
Karen began playing volleyball at age 14 and following a successful high school career in Maryland, she earned a full volleyball scholarship to Villanova, a Big East NCAA Dvision I program. As a 4 year starter at Villanova, Karen held the all-time kills record that stood for more than ten years and won several all-tournament awards as a middle blocker during her collegiate career. After college, Karen played the middle blocker position for three USAV Open Nationals teams. She continues to play competitive volleyball.
Karen and her husband have two volleyball playing daughters that have spent their careers at Aspire. Kendall, who played on Aspire’s first 12’s & 13’s teams, is a middle hitter that is now playing volleyball for Grand Canyon University. Chapin, her youngest daughter, is in college on a full volleyball scholarship at Gonzaga University.
As an Aspire club coach, Karen has led 12s, 13s, 14s, 16s and 17s teams to top finishes in the AZ Region and at National qualifiers. Karen’s 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015 12 Rox team’s finished first in the AZ Region with the 2012’s team winning the SoCal NQ and 2014 team finishing 5th in the National division at GJNC’s. Coach Gray’s 2013 17 Rox Team won the KC NQ. Her teams have qualified for and participated in the Junior Olympics National Championships for the last seven years, 2011 – 2017.
